2026 Key Leader Honoree Jimmy Bass

During the September Board Meeting in Washington, D.C., TADA board member Jimmy Bass of Jim Bass Ford, Jim Bass Mazda and Jim Bass Nissan was honored as the 2026 Key Leader. Jimmy is a third-generation dealer with extraordinary leadership, quiet generosity and a lifetime of dedication to his community.

His story began nearly three decades ago, back in 1996. After finishing college up north in Pennsylvania, a young Jimmy Bass packed up his life, hitched a U-Haul trailer to his Ford Bronco II and pointed his steering wheel toward his family’s dealership in Texas. This Bronco II wasn’t just any standard vehicle. It had massive, oversized tires on it. They were so big that his grandfather took one look at them, shook his head and warned him that those tires were an absolute rollover risk. But with determination in his heart, and thankfully without rolling over on the highway, he made it safely to his destination.

When Jimmy arrived at his family’s multi-line dealership, he did not start in an executive office. He started at the very bottom. He worked in the parts department — stocking shelves and learning the business from the ground up. Later, he moved over to the wash rack, scrubbing vehicles in the Texas heat, which turned out to be the best career move he ever made because he met a special young woman who would become his wife of 28 years.

Around that same time, as a fresh transplant to Texas, he decided to embrace his new surroundings in a unique way by buying a horse from a colleague. This immediately prompted everyone at the dealership to ask, “What in the world is a Yankee doing buying a horse?” He ended up selling the horse, but the lesson was clear: Jimmy was never afraid to dive into something new.

Jimmy spent time working in almost every single position across the dealership. Over time, he became the ultimate Mr. Fix-It. His grandfather always deeply appreciated his ability to repair anything that was broken. If there was a problem to solve, he would find a way, even if it meant going down a deep rabbit hole until he figured it out.

That problem-solving mindset extends far beyond business, as it truly defines how he cares for his family. During the 2008 financial crisis, a challenging era for business owners across the nation, he demonstrated what true sacrifice looks like. He traded in his own vehicle for a used Ford Aerostar minivan, putting his family and his business above any personal vanity.

When his children were born, he gave up his personal love for golf so that every moment of his free time could be spent with his kids. In fact, he hid that sacrifice so well that for years, one of his children genuinely believed he just did not like golf!

If you know Jimmy personally, you know that discipline is simply part of his DNA. Discipline defines who he is at his core, as evidenced by his practice of martial arts, where he has earned a black belt in Aiki Jujutsu along with a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His morning routine is truly legendary: Every breakfast consists of six eggs and a bowl of blueberry oatmeal. When extra protein is called for, he adds a cold piece of leftover grilled chicken. Though on cheat days, Panda Express is his go-to spot. And what is that extra protein for? Helping accomplish his personal deadlift record of 438 pounds. As impressive as that is, physical strength only scratches the surface of who this man is. You cannot put a number on how strong he is relationally, how strong he is as a leader or how strong he is spiritually.

Beyond the walls of his dealership, Jimmy’s heart for service is boundless. His community involvement across West Texas touches countless lives. He generously invests his time, resources and energy into organizations like the United Way, the Lions Club and the Boy Scouts of America. He supports programs addressing mental health, initiatives for our elderly population, the Lighthouse for the Blind, West Texas Rehab and the special needs community. He quietly funds scholarships out of his own pocket for deserving young students across West Texas, paving the way for the next generation.

He also holds profound respect for the men and women who protect our country. Through various organizations and initiatives, he has steadfastly supported active-duty military members, veterans and their families, recognizing the immense sacrifices made on behalf of all of us.

Within the automotive industry, Jimmy’s leadership extends to the national level, where he currently serves on the Ford Dealer Advertising Fund Board, contributing his experience, perspective and leadership to the dealer community.

Yet, for all this impact, you will almost never see his name on a plaque. For him, giving back has never been about having his name attached to something. It is simply about seeing a need and doing what he can to help. In many cases, the people who benefited may never even know who was standing quietly behind them.

Being a third-generation business owner carries with it both privilege and responsibility. Jimmy understands that inheriting a family legacy means honoring those who came before him while making certain that what they built remains strong for those who will follow. Today, seeing two of his own children join the dealership represents something truly extraordinary: the continuation of a family business into its fourth generation.

Underneath the humor, the physical discipline, the business success and the community involvement is the unshakeable foundation upon which he has built his life: his faith.

His faith is deeply important to him and serves as his guide, not only personally, but in the way he approaches his family, his business, his employees, his community and the decisions he makes every day.

Alongside that faith is his devotion to family. For three decades, Jimmy has worked to honor a family legacy while creating one distinctly his own: a legacy grounded in faith, family, hard work, discipline, generosity, community and service to others.

When you look at the entirety of his life and career, his impact cannot simply be measured in vehicles sold, years in business, positions held or professional accomplishments. That says more about him than any award ever could.

Thank you, Jimmy, for all you have done throughout your career, and congratulations on this well-deserved honor.
