38 New Vehicle Sales Texas vs. California In the past 14 years California has outsold Texas dealers by as many as 866,449 new units in a year. Steadily eroding that leader- ship position, Texas dealers were outsold by only 274,477 new units in 2014, a swing of almost 600,000 sales. Texas has 69% of California’s population, but Texas dealers sold 85% as many new units in 2014 as California, which boasts a population difference of almost 12 million. The race for sales will be interesting to follow in the coming years since Texas currently has 8.45% of the nation’s population and 9.62% of the country’s new vehicle sales according to NADA. Another key indicator is that Texas franchised dealers every year sell a new car to every 17 Texans versus 21 for California and 19.5 for the U.S., a much higher sales rate per capita. Texas dealers are setting the pace for the nation and are now close to selling one out of every ten new vehicles delivered in the entire United States. 7 YEAR Texas California Year Difference AVERAGE 2014 Population 2014 Population 2001 599,066 26,956,958 38,802,500 2002 634,108 2003 668,350 U.S. 2004 866,449 2014 Population 2005 860,422 5 Yr.
