Any unusua l hobbies? Thoroughbred horse racing has al- ways been a passion. My foray in-to horse racing began when a customer enticed me to pur- chase a Thoroughbred mare that was bred to a quarter horse for $100,000. The mare had a filly, and six months later, I sold the filly for $125,000. I thought this horse business was too easy. I quickly discovered that the horse racing business wasn’t easy, but I made a name for myself in the Quar- ter Horse Racing Society. After 10 years of success on the quarter horse side, Iwas ready for a newchallenge and in 1997moved toThoroughbred rac- ing. Susan and I live on a farm and own Classic Racing Stables, where we raise and race Thoroughbreds. If you could boil your very success- ful career into three pieces of “good advice,” what would they be? Well, that’s hard to pinpoint a life-long career into three top pieces of advice, but first, in this business you can’t live off just selling cars. The service, shop and parts departments all have to run well and every department has to pull its own weight. Second, it really is about loca- tion. You need tomake it easy for people to find you and convenient for people to get to you. And finally, this is a people business. I know that research is done online, and the consumer is much more educated than ever before, but people do business with other people. How about the tough days? How do you handle those? We all have hard days. The slow days where it’s hard to create business. You have to take it one day at a time. Make the most of each day – do what you can. One day at a time. Tell us about a good day. The one that really stood out. I’m lucky. I have a lot of good days. But you know, the ones that stand out were the days that I bought deal- erships. Some were bought during hard, lean times, when nobody was in the market. They were opportu- nities, certainly, but they also came with a fair amount of risk. I didn’t know it at the time, but those were the great days. And just like the tough days, the good ones come one day at a time, too.   INTERVIEWWITH TOM DURANT — CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 ATTORNEYS AT LAW Visit our website at www.jdkglaw.com Johnson De L uca Kurisky & Gould, P.C.
