14 After work ing in many different departments and learning as much as possible, Janke became general manager in 1997 and took the helm as president when Tommie Vaughn died in 2005. Under Janke’s leadership, Tommie Vaughn Ford expanded. “We were one of the first dealerships to implement the practice of customer car pick-up and delivery - and to offer transportation shuttles for customers in the service department,” Janke said. Sons Kyle and Kirby have also trained by doing a multiple of jobs and today manage service, parts, finance and sales. “It’s fun watching them and trying to mold them to do business the right way, the way my father-in-law taught me, which is taking care of the customer,” said Janke. “That’s the whole thing. It’s what it’s all about.” The Janke family’s enterprises also include Tommie Vaughn Auto Country in Columbus, Texas, which sells Ford, Chr ysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. Columbus is also home to Tommie Vaughn Polaris, which sells off-road vehicles. Janke has worked with the Houston Livestock Show andRodeo for 40 years, serving in many different capacities, including vice president. The annual show provides scholarships, educational endowments and funds ag r ic u lt u r a l r e s ea rch proj ec t s . “Currently, more than 2,000 students are on rodeo scholarships, attending more than 80 different Texas colleges and universities,” Janke said. “The value of these scholarships is approximately $47 million, and the rodeo has donated nearly $430 million to scholarships, g r ant s , endowment s and ot her educational programs since 1932.” “Mr. Janke’s is a great guy,” said David Watson, who’s worked in sales at Tommie Vaughn Ford for 28 years. “He’s very honest and straightforward. He’s basically low-key and doesn’t say much but watches everything.” Tommie Vaughn Ford has earned Ford Motor Co.’s highly coveted President’s Award seven times. “Receiving any community recognition on behalf of the dealership is always an honor,” Janke said. “It means that our hard work has been recognized. The dealership puts a lot of pride in its customer satisfaction and sales performance.” Larry Gach, Ford’s regional manager in Houston, notes that, Janke is nationally recognized for his parts business and has been a leader in Ford racing parts for many years. “Like Ford, Jim Janke oversees a large family business that has been serving the community for decades.
