Nyle Maxwell to date has sponsored eight of these missions and accompanies the veterans every step of the way to ensure that their visit to Washington and the military monuments honoring their achievements is an experience that confirms a grateful nation’s appreciation for their sacrifice. The celebration begins at Austin’s City Hall with a reception and orientation for the honorees and their escorts where Nyle speaks to the veterans about the trip to D.C. and how proud he is to recognize their service. A few days following the reception, Nyle and Nancy meet the veterans at Austin Bergstrom International Airport where they are led to their gate for departure with a bagpiper leading the procession and hundreds of airline passengers with their hands over their hearts and many with tears in their eyes standing reverently as a vanguard to see these men and women off to the nation’s capital. Once in D.C., Nyle and Nancy Maxwell host a dinner for the veterans where Nyle, once again, speaks to the group about the importance of their service to the country and what to expect on their tour of D.C. and the memorials. On the following day the veterans, many in wheelchairs, visit the World War II and Korean War memorials, which are both so well done, and reflective of the struggle and redemption of those who fought and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. All of the Honor Flight veterans receive a cap designating their service which is recognized by the hundreds of other monument visitors from around the country.
