16 Maund History T he Maund family has served Austin, Texas, for 62 years, ever since the family patriarch, Charles Maund and his wife, Helen, moved from Port Arthur to open Charles Maund Oldsmobile Cadillac. A self-made man, like so many outstanding Texas dealers, Charles Maund borrowed $500 when he was 16 years old and bought a used car to fix up and sell. A natural salesman, young Charles opened a used car lot in Port Arthur when he was 18 years old, eventually owning five used car dealerships in the city. He married Helen Lang in Port Arthur when he was 21 and in five years, bought a half interest in the Olds-Cadillac dealership in Port Arthur. At 31 years old, he bought his first Austin dealership. Charles Maund eventually owned stores in Odessa, Longview, and San Angelo as well as Shreveport, Louisiana. Charles’ son, Doug, came to work in the family business at an early age and helped his father grow the organization through those formative years. Today Doug’s son, Erik, works with his father to carry on the legacy of their late fa- ther and grandfather, Charles Maund, to serve the industry and Texas as the Maund family has for 74 years, beginning with that first used car dealership in Port Arthur in 1945 as World War II sent soldiers home to start a new life, and were in need of personal transportation to build an even greater Texas. 
